The Famous Chorley Cake

Let’s start with the most important aspect of Chorley – the food!

The town is famous for its Chorley cakes, which are a delicious pastry filled with currants and sugar. The cake has been a local delicacy for over 200 years, and you’ll find them in every bakery and café in town.

Just make sure you don’t eat too many – they’re addictively tasty!

Chorley Market Days

If you’re looking for a bargain, then Chorley’s market days, which date back to 1498, are a must-visit.

Chorley’s covered market operates 4 days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday).

Then on a Tuesday (the most popular market day) over 150 stalls also line the streets. You’ll find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts, and there’s always a friendly atmosphere.

Be prepared to haggle with the local traders, they love a bit of banter.

Visit Astley Hall

One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is Astley Hall, which first opened to the public in 1924, 2 years after Reginald Arthur Tatton gave it to the people of Chorley.

This beautiful Grade I listed, Elizabethan house is surrounded by stunning gardens and is a popular spot for weddings and events.

It’s also said to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Charlotte, who is said to roam the halls at night. If you’re feeling brave, you can join a ghost tour and try to spot her for yourself.

With over 700 acres of woodland, parkland, and lakes, it’s a haven for wildlife and a great place to go for a walk. You might even spot a kingfisher or two if you’re lucky.
